This week Matthew Atkinson of the Paciello Group shared his thoughts on growth opportunities in the field of low-vision research. Rather than relying on screen-magnification technologies and “grid” layouts of websites, Mr. Atkinson posits that accessibility research should focus instead on more responsive layouts that adapt to the user, higher-resolution content that takes advantage of the high-resolution screens found on most of today’s smartphones and computer screens, and a minimum font size for all web content. There are many routes to the path to improved accessibility for people with sensory disabilities, and Mr. Atkinson reasons that utilizing smart design, internet platforms, and computing can empower more people than most traditional methods.
