December 2017 – At the International Conference of the World Federation of the Deaf in Budapest, a $500,000 grand challenge was announced to spark innovative solutions to expand access to sign language education in developing settings. According to the press release, there are an estimated 32 million children worldwide who are deaf or hearing impaired, of which only 2% receive sign language education. Without access to education, many deaf or hearing-impaired children will face serious communication challenges throughout their lives. The competition, called Sign on For Literacy, is being organized by All Children Reading and is looking for applications through mid-February. The competition will take three phases: the first seeks to identify promising project proposals that will increase sign language literacy and educational outreach, the second for development of a prototype device, and the third for the refinement of the prototype.
