Bionic Hand Uses Built-in Camera to Hone in on Objects

Image of prosthetic hand with webcam

Researchers at Newcastle University designed a commercial prosthetic hand with a webcam and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to improve the grasping ability of amputees. This system stores the features of similar objects it has encountered thereby improving its ability to grasp novel objects. Due to its inexpensive components, people can have their prosthetics adapted, as opposed to having to purchase and fit new ones.
