October 3, 2017 - This past week, the Disability Outreach Center at Western Washington University celebrated its tenth annual Student Disability Awareness Week. The event was founded by disability advocate Daman Wandke, who holds an MBA in Management Information Systems. Mr. Wandke lives with cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair, and his travel experiences inspired the AbiliTrek solution. Recently, Mr. Wandke has participated in a 54-hour challenge called the Bellingham Startup Challenge. There, his team devoted their time on solutions to increase accessibility of travel for people with disabilities. The result of this challenge would become Access Travel LLC, and the group is now announcing AbiliTrek, their latest venture in increasing accessibility options that cater to the unique needs of the traveler.
Speaking of this service, Mr. Wandke said, “nobody else is doing what we’re doing [at AbiliTrek], we are the only site that provides a resource for people with disabilities who travel and have specific accessibility needs.” Logan Helgeland, who does marketing for the organization said, “we want to provide AbiliTrek to travelers so they can trek without boundaries. We’re planning to expand to Seattle and even beyond.”
In addition to providing travelers with disabilities increased travel opportunities and accommodations, Wandke and team continue to advocate for disability rights and awareness everywhere. [Source: Jennifer Dodge, WhatcomTalk]
